Kick Back with A Christmas Book This Season

My kids checked off their Christmas shopping lists in less than an hour of one-stop shopping, came home, wrapped their gifts, and DONE. Meanwhile, I’m still cobbling together lists, eyeing the calendar and wondering if I can get everything ordered and delivered before Christmas as our governor again tightens the reins on retail shopping.

In the waning days of 2020, let’s find a little joy, a little comfort, and a little peace by turning to a good Christmas book (or two, or twenty). I’ve assembled a list for the littlest family members on up. Eventually I’ll get my reviews completed and linked, but in the interest of sharing the list before Christmas, along with some reading and gift-giving links, here are my 2020 picks:

“A Perfect Christmas” Short Story Ebook Now Available

My contribution to the Catholic Teen Books 2019 Christmas anthology Gifts: Visible & Invisible is now available separately as a 99-cent ebook on Kindle and other ebook platforms.

No tree, no cookies, no gifts. Not a single flake of snow. With sick siblings, Dad stranded, and Mom overwhelmed, will Christmas come at all to Marigold’s topsy-turvy home?

“A Perfect Christmas,” while written from the perspective a fifteen-year-old girl, addresses that desire so many of us have to get everything done just right for Christmas–all the shopping, all the decorating, and, of course, all the cookies! Sometimes reality doesn’t match up to our aspirations or even our well-laid plans.

The Perfection of Your Imperfect Christmas

Christmas 2018

Christmas. The lights. The sparkle. Pittsburgh actually dubbed the run-up to Christmas as Sparkle Season at one point. And that it is.

I scroll through Instagram and see cozy homes lit by fire glow. Magnificent trees and Christmasy home décor. Gifts, gifts, and gifts galore.

Families with twice as many children as I do have carefully observed every Advent practice and feast culminating in a languid and joy-filled celebration of the 12 Days of Christmas straight through Epiphany and on to Candlemas Day. I know because they document it in posts and stories.

In my weaker moments, I’m tempted to envy. In my too-small house with growing children and shrinking income, my celebration doesn’t compare. Theirs teems with Christmas revelry, ours brims with clutter.

A grateful heart is the best antidote. But a discerning eye also reminds me that all is not what it may seem. Continue reading

7 Catholic Books For Christmas Including 2 You Should Get NOW, Before Advent

The stores are bedecked in Christmas decorations, and I hear tell there is Christmas music playing on the radio, though I refuse to partake of it just yet.

Even so, it’s not too early to think of Christmas gift-giving , and Advent is just around the corner!

7 Catholic Books for Xmas and Advent

For Adults

Gaze Upon Jesus*Gaze Upon Jesus: Experiencing Christ’s Childhood through the Eyes of Women edited by Kelly M. Wahlquist

This is the perfect tool for a Christian woman’s Advent study – either individually or in a group. In six sections examining six virtues, the reader meditates on a separate event (i.e, the Annunciation, the Visitation) starting with scripture but including analysis, a fictional story to bring the events to life, reflection, group questions, and the study of sacred art. The addition of the artwork and Stephanie Landsem’s wonderful storytelling set this apart from other studies. Useful any time of year, but most fruitful for the Advent season.

Drinking with Saint Nick*Drinking with Saint Nick: Christmas Cocktails for Saints and Sinners by Michael P.  Foley

This beautiful hardcover book includes beer and wine recommendations and dozens of cocktail recipes for Advent through Candlemas. Pick and choose among drink suggestions made according to the calendar, the twelve days of Christmas, the Golden Nights, and more. With each entry, learn more about the saints, the liturgical calendar, and Church history. Makes a lovely gift! Continue reading

Doing the Most With and For the Least This Christmas

I considered whether this post didn’t belong in November, the month in which Catholics traditionally remember the poor souls in Purgatory. Is a reflection on conversion, sacrifice, and the last things too melancholy for the pre-Christmas season?

But “pre-Christmas” isn’t really a season. A marketing device maybe, but not a true season and definitely not a liturgical season. The more I thought, the more I became convinced that Advent is a perfect time to meditate on sin and conversion. Continue reading
